What Is a Skin Prep Spray?

A skin prep spray (also called a makeup primer mist or pre-makeup spray) is a lightweight mist you apply after moisturiser and before foundation. It’s different from a setting spray (which goes over the top of a finished face) and different from a toner (which is a skincare step, not a makeup step).

Its job is to create the ideal surface for makeup to land on.

What Does It Actually Do?

A well-formulated prep spray does several things:

  • Smooths skin texture — filling in the microscopic texture of skin so foundation glides on more evenly
  • Adds a hydration layer — damp skin holds makeup better than dry skin, which is why foundation always looks better in humid weather
  • Extends wear — by creating a better bond between skin and foundation, it helps everything last longer
  • Makes makeup look more natural — when foundation has somewhere good to land, it sits in skin rather than sitting on top of it

Do You Need It If You Don’t Wear Makeup?

Yes, actually. A good prep spray also works beautifully on bare skin — giving a dewy, fresh-looking finish without any product. It’s one of those things that looks like skincare from the outside, which is exactly the point.

How To Use It

Apply after moisturiser has absorbed. Hold the bottle 20cm from your face. Spritz 2–3 times in an “X” or “T” motion across the face. Allow 10–15 seconds to dry before applying any makeup.

That’s it. The difference you’ll notice immediately is that your foundation blends more easily. The difference you’ll notice at 6pm is that it’s still there.
