Jojoba oil has been in beauty products for decades — but its story is more interesting than most people realise. Because technically, jojoba isn’t an oil at all.

It’s a wax ester. And that distinction makes all the difference.

What Is Jojoba?

Jojoba (pronounced ho-HO-ba) is a shrub native to the Sonoran Desert in North America. The seeds produce a golden liquid that has been used in beauty and personal care for generations. Despite being called an oil, jojoba is actually a liquid wax — a wax ester, to be precise.

This matters because the sebum your skin naturally produces is also largely made up of wax esters. Which means jojoba is structurally more similar to your skin’s own oil than almost any other plant-derived ingredient.

What Does This Mean For Your Skin?

Because jojoba so closely mimics skin’s natural sebum:

  • It absorbs quickly — skin recognises it and accepts it readily
  • It doesn’t clog pores — it’s non-comedogenic, safe for oily and acne-prone skin
  • It balances oil production — when skin is adequately moisturised, it tends to produce less excess sebum
  • It conditions without grease — the wax ester structure means it leaves skin soft without a heavy residue
  • It’s naturally stable — wax esters don’t oxidise the way many plant oils do, so jojoba has a long shelf life without synthetic preservatives

What About On Lips?

Jojoba is particularly effective on lips because the skin there is thinner and more permeable. It absorbs quickly, conditions deeply and helps create the soft, plump look that a good lip product should deliver. It’s also non-sticky — which is exactly why it’s a core ingredient in our Glow Lip Oil.

Where You’ll Find It In Our Range

  • Glow Lip Oil — jojoba as a key carrier oil for weightless, conditioning shine
  • Golden Hour Body Oil — jojoba provides the fast-absorbing, non-greasy base that makes our body oil dry in under 90 seconds

The reason both of these products absorb so quickly and feel so comfortable on skin is largely down to jojoba. It does the work, quietly, without drawing attention to itself — which is exactly how the best ingredients behave.
