There’s a reason the lip oil category has exploded over the last few years. It fills a gap that lip gloss and lip balm have never quite managed: the product that conditions like a treatment, wears like a gloss and feels comfortable enough to reapply all day without thinking about it.

But not all lip oils are the same. Here’s what to look for, what to avoid, and what makes the Glow Lip Oil different.

What to Look For in a Lip Oil

The Carrier Oil Base

The base oil determines how the product feels, absorbs and wears. The best lip oils use lightweight, fast-absorbing oils that condition without heaviness:

  • Squalane — skin-identical, absorbs quickly, non-sticky. The gold standard.
  • Jojoba — a wax ester that closely mimics natural lip oils. Conditioning without grease.
  • Castor Oil — adds viscosity and the glossy finish. Creates the plumping visual effect.

Avoid lip oils with heavy silicones as the primary ingredient — they create a gloss-like surface feel but don’t actually condition the lip.

No Stickiness

Sticky lip products are usually a sign of high polybutene content (the same ingredient that creates high-shine gloss). Sticky lips mean hair sticking, uncomfortable wear and constant awareness of the product. A good lip oil should feel like it’s barely there.

Buildable Shine

A good lip oil should be sheer to start and buildable with layers. If it’s too opaque or heavy in one coat, it’s not a lip oil — it’s a tinted product marketed as one.

Reapplication Without Buildup

The defining characteristic of a genuinely good lip oil: it reapplies cleanly without creating layers or going patchy. Each application looks like a fresh coat, not a buildup of product.

What to Avoid

  • Mint or menthol as a “plumping” agent — these create irritation that mimics plumping. Temporary, uncomfortable and not great for frequent use.
  • Very high fragrance loads — fragrance is fine in small amounts, but the lips are a porous area. Heavy fragrance ingredients don’t belong as a primary feature.
  • Mineral oil as the base — it coats rather than conditions, and doesn’t deliver the long-term softness that plant-derived oils provide.

The Glow Lip Oil Formula

Our Glow Lip Oil is built around squalane, jojoba seed oil and castor oil — the three ingredients that create the conditioning, non-sticky, glassy formula we wanted. Vitamin E for antioxidant protection. A nature-identical fragrance at a minimal, comfortable concentration.

The result: glassy, non-sticky, genuinely conditioning shine that improves with every wear and reapplies cleanly, every time.

That’s what a lip oil should do. That’s what ours does.
