Face mist is one of the most underrated products in a beauty routine. It's also one of the most misunderstood. A lot of people think it's a nice-to-have. It isn't. Here's what a genuinely good face mist does and how to use it correctly.

What a Face Mist Actually Does

A face mist does three things when formulated correctly. First, it delivers active ingredients — like niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and aloe vera — to skin in a format that absorbs quickly and doesn't disturb anything already on your face. Second, it adds surface hydration that makes skin look plumper, dewier and more alive. Third, over and over makeup, it can reset skin that's started to look flat or dry throughout the day.

What a face mist doesn't do: hydrate deeply on its own (it evaporates too quickly for that), set makeup in a meaningful way (that's what a prep spray does), or replace moisturiser.

Face Mist vs Prep Spray: The Difference

This is the question we get asked most about the face category.

Face mist (like the Flow State Face Mist) is a hydrating, refreshing spray that works on bare skin and over makeup. Use it to prep skin in the morning, to refresh throughout the day, post-gym, or as a final step over a completed makeup look. It contains niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and Vitamin B5 for active skin benefits.

Prep spray (like the Soft Focus Skin Prep Spray) is designed specifically for the step before makeup. It smooths the skin surface, blurs pores and creates the base that makes foundation, concealer and everything after sit better and last longer. Applied after moisturiser, before foundation. Contains hyaluronic acid and rosehip oil.

Most people benefit from having both. If you had to choose one: if you don't wear much makeup, the face mist is more versatile. If you wear makeup daily and it's not lasting or looking good, the prep spray will make the biggest difference.

The Right Way to Use a Face Mist

Eyes closed. Bottle 20cm from face. Two to three spritzes in a gentle sweeping motion. Allow to settle for five seconds before continuing your routine or applying anything else. Don't wipe it in — let it absorb.

The most common mistake: holding the bottle too close (15cm or less) creates a wetter, more concentrated spray that can move existing makeup or feel too heavy. 20cm gives the ultra-fine particle distribution that settles on skin without disturbing it.

How Often Can You Use a Face Mist?

As often as you like. There's no upper limit for an alcohol-free formula like the Flow State Face Mist. Morning, mid-day, post-gym, on bare skin, over makeup — it performs the same in every context. Some people use it six or seven times a day at their desk. That's not excessive. That's the product doing its job.
